When asked about the reports linking the Bulgarian with his former club, Ivan Dobrinov a member of the group that represents Berbatov, confirmed there had been contact with Bayer Leverkusen over a possible transfer.
He said: “It’s more than a rumour. Leverkusen have it on their minds to get Berbatov. There is contact, but nothing concrete yet. It all depends on United’s plans.”
Dimitar Berbatov’s appearances have been limited this season to just 14 and with contract due to expire in the summer there have been rumours linking him with away from Manchester in order to get regular playing time.
Reports started linking him with moves away from Old Trafford after he fell down the pecking order behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck this season and according to Dobrinov, he still has special fondness for his former club where he played between 2001-06.
He continued: “The player has never forgotten Leverkusen, the club is still very dear to him. Furthermore, he has a good relationship with the leadership at Bayer.”
Leverkusen CEO Wolfgang Holzhauser confirmed that he has been in touch with Berbatov but insisted that there is no concrete word as yet regarding the transfer.
“I would even say that the contact is friendly,” he added.
“But there is certainly nothing concrete at the moment. I also read that Manchester United would like to extend his contract.”
Despite of the rumours linking him with moves away from Old Trafford, Berbatov has been in fine form recently collecting a hat trick against Wigan in his last outing for the English Champions meaning he has 5 goals in his last four games for United.
Berbatov has always stressed that he sees his future at Old Trafford with Manchester United being his dream club and a move anywhere else means a step down for any player. It remains to be seen whether something happens in the January Transfer Window or in the summer.Tweet
