The Mirror’s Darren Lewis has hailed Ryan Giggs as Manchester United’s greatest ever player
Cristiano Ronaldo might have grabbed a bigger share of the limelight in his Old Trafford days and especially in recent weeks with his current club Real Madrid at half time in their last 16 Champions League tie with United, but veteran Giggs is the GREATEST EVER United player.
Two weeks ago – as Planet Football gushed over Cristiano Ronaldo – some fans and pundits hailed the Portugesestar as the greatest player United have ever seen.
Lewis says there is a great deal to put Ronaldo right up there – the goals he has scored, the trophies he has won and the big moments he has produced in some huge games – but, never mind United, English football may never see the like of Ryan Giggs again.
The 39-year-old Welsh winger’s 80th-minute strike sealed the points for United in a 2-0 win at QPR and established a 15-point lead going into Sunday’s games.
Giggs had produced.
Yet again. In his 999th competitive appearance – 19 years after a wonder goal in a 3-2 win at Loftus Road back in February 1994.
Lewis endeared himself to United fans when he said that Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini had spouted ‘complete claptrap’ on Saturday, claiming United had been lucky to pile up the points that have afforded them such a commanding advantage.
“The truth is, Giggs sums up the invincible spirit that exists within the United side. He is the perfect example of how not to rest on your laurels.”
Giggs is an example from whom more than a few of City’s multi-millionaire players, who have simply not turned up this year, can learn.
His winning mentality is the reason why the next 11 games amount to little more than a lap of honour for United who are on course to become the Premier League’s easiest title winners ever.
Players like Giggs are the reason why Sir Alex has been able to bring through so many young players, with the Welshman’s appetite serving as the blueprint for success.
