On a day where milestones were met it was a certain debutant who stole the headlines. Scholes, Giggs and Ferdinand had to take a back seat as Alex Buttner, United’s summer signing from Vitesse Arnhem took it upon himself to steal centre stage from the grasp of his illustrious colleagues.
The Dutchman grabbed himself an assist, putting the ball on a plate for the goal snatcher that is Chicharito and scoring a superb solo effort. Patrice Evra must have been watching on with fear that if he does not step his game up his days of being a first team regular could well be over.
Evra has been below par for a couple of seasons now seemingly started against Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley where Pedro snuck in behind him as his positional negligence got the better of him. He hasn’t seemed to have recovered since then
It wasn’t until this season where some real competition has been bought in to compete with the Frenchman. Leighton Baines was rumoured which must have had Evra worrying but then Buttner signed and Evra must have assumed he is THE starter. Maybe this mind frame will not change.
It was only a home game against Wigan but how many left backs grab an assist and a goal on their home debut? Wigan or not he will now be in the forefront of Fergie’s mind and it may not be until next Sunday against Liverpool where we realise who is United’s first choice left back.
